Federal Income Tax Calculator
Enter your income and filing status and get an estimated federal income tax with the math fully shown: your taxable income after deductions and pre-tax contributions, a bracket-by-bracket breakdown of the tax, your marginal rate, and your effective rate. The bracket tables cite their IRS source and verification date, and the tool states exactly what it does not model — capital gains, self-employment tax, AMT, and state taxes. It is an educational estimate, not tax advice. No signup, and nothing you enter is stored.

Tax estimator — FAQ
How accurate is this tax estimate?
The math is exact for the inputs you provide and the bracket table shown, which cites its IRS source and verification date. But it models ordinary income only — capital gains, self-employment tax, AMT, state taxes, and most credits are not included — so treat the result as an estimate, not a tax return.
What is the difference between effective and marginal rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income — the top bracket your taxable income reaches. Your effective rate is total tax divided by total income, which is always lower in a progressive system because earlier dollars are taxed at lower rates. The bracket breakdown shows exactly which rates applied to which slices.
Do retirement contributions reduce my taxes?
Pre-tax contributions — a traditional 401(k) or IRA — reduce taxable income dollar for dollar in this model, subject to IRS annual limits. Roth contributions do not reduce current-year taxable income and are not modeled here.
Is this tax advice?
No. This is an educational estimate produced by a standard progressive-bracket model — not tax advice, not a tax preparation, and not a guarantee of what you will owe. Figures are verified against cited IRS sources, but tax law changes: consult a qualified tax professional before making decisions.
